The following is my personal opinion, based on media reports, government announcements, and other sources.
In my 25-year career, I have never experienced a data center disaster as severe as this one. I was shocked by the government's announcement that it could take two weeks for the system to recover fully.
I anticipate that this incident will impact national policies encompassing national informatization, data centers, cybersecurity, and even AI. Furthermore, if any national policies and regulations are based on outdated computing technologies, I believe they should be boldly reformed under the premise that national security is guaranteed.
The current government, which emphasizes AI innovation, should reexamine everything, including the National Data Center's underlying infrastructure, from the ground up. Fortunately, I watched on the media that President Lee issued such an order during an emergency meeting he chaired.
I participated in strengthening the security systems of two Korean government data centers immediately after they were built and began operations. Until recently, I continued to advise on enhancing e-government security. While I hope that the national data centers' disaster recovery will return to normal quickly after this fire, I was also shocked by the profound and fundamental problems with the national data center disaster recovery system.
I was also shocked by the government's announcement that the restoration of most national services, halted solely by the fire in a small area of the data center, has already exceeded the legally required three hours and that full recovery will take two weeks.
At the President's direction, the circumstances of this incident and the recovery process are being made public, with detailed information being reported daily through the media. Below is a link to the official briefing from the Office of the President, in Korean.
